Before semi-occlusive bandages (Dermshield, Saniderm, Tegaderm etc) existed, we healed tattoos very differently. If you don't like using dermshield for whatever reason, whether it be a comfort thing, or allergy, this is how we recommend healing without those bandage applications:

1) Bandaging After Tattoo Completion: Following your tattoo, we'll apply a non-adherent gauze pad with a thin layer of ointment. This will be wrapped using options like plastic wrap, coflex tape, or masking tape.

2) It is recommended to leave this bandage on for at least an hour, however it can be worn up to 4-6.

3) After removing the bandage, gently and thoroughly wash your tattoo with antibacterial soap and warm water. Only use your fingers for washing.

4) Pat your tattoo dry with paper towels. Avoid using fabric, which can harbor bacteria even if freshly washed.

5) Use an unscented moisturizer on the area. We recommend a light layer of Aquaphor or a thin coat of hypoallergenic lotions like Lubriderm, Cetaphil, or Eucerin.

6) Daily Process: Repeat this process 2-4 times daily.

7) Re-Bandaging and Covering: It's advisable to avoid re-bandaging during healing. Short-term covering is acceptable for work or sleep; remember to wash the tattoo thoroughly if you re-wrap it.

8) Healing Duration: Healing this way may take 2-4 weeks, slower than with semi-occlusive bandages. Judge how much moisturizer and cleaning your tattoo needs based on its condition. If it becomes warm or itchy, it's time to wash and apply lotion.

9) Stages of Healing: Expect your tattoo to progress through 3-4 healing stages:

  1. Warm and Stingy (skin perforations closing).

  2. Sore and Tightening (inflammation subsiding, scar tissue forming).

  3. Scabbing and Peeling (areas of color may scab, dead skin peels off; also the "itchy" phase).

  4. Shiny, due to new skin cell growth. The tattoo is healed on a surface level when the new epidermis layer loses its shine.
